[Softball] Grand View Battles Way to MCC Softball Tourney Title & National Tourney Bid

It was nothing short of a battle tonight as Grand View faced off against top-seeded St. Ambrose in the MCC Tournament Championship game held in Moline, Illinois.

Going into the night with one loss in the tourney to St. Ambrose, the two-seed Vikings had to beat the Queen Bees twice for the title and the automatic bid to nationals. Both games went back-and-forth in score with the Vikings persevering in both contests (5-4, 7-6) and securing a trip to the NAIA Championships.

Oskaloosa--The 2013 softball all-Midwest Collegiate Conference honors have been announced. A total of 37 athletes were recognized from a vote by the coaches, including 18 first-teamers and 19 honorable mentions.

[Softball] St. Ambrose wins first conference softball title since 2001

St. Ambrose recovered from an 0-4 start in conference play to win the Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season softball title for the first time since 2001. And all it took was a school-record winning streak.

The Queen Bees extended their program-best winning streak to 14 games by taking a doubleheader from William Penn by scores of 10-2 and 4-3. SAU, winners of 15 of their last 16 conference games, finish the regular season 38-13 overall and 15-5 in the MCC.

Thanks to Grand View sweeping a doubleheader from Mount Mercy Tuesday night, the Bees win the outright title by a full game over both Grand View and Mount Mercy.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2012 Softball All-America teams, selected by the NAIA All-America committee and comprised of First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention selections.

Grand View University catcher Emily Gilbert (Prairie City, Iowa) was voted to this year's NAIA All-America Second Team. The award marks her third All-American award; she was voted to the First Team in 2011 and the Second Team in 2010.

The Midwest Collegiate Conference has announced its all-conference honors for the 2012 softball season. Thirty-eight athletes were recognized as part of the all-conference teams as voted on by coaches.

William Penn senior outfielder Khyia Lewis (Ottumwa, Iowa) is the 2012 MCC Player of the Year. Lewis led the conference in a number of categories, including runs batted in (56), doubles (16), total bases (131), slugging percentage (.789) and on base percentage (.462). She also tied for the MCC lead in both home runs (16) and runs scored (53) and was third in batting average (.367) and hits (61). Lewis is 10th in the NAIA in home runs and also ranks in the top 20 nationally in total bases and RBIs, and helped the Lady Statesmen to the MCC regular season title.

[Softball] MCC Softball Tournament Bracket Released; Tourney Begins Saturday

The Midwest Collegiate Conference has released the brackets for the opening round of the 2012 MCC Softball Tournament, which begins play this weekend.

William Penn, Grand View and Mount Mercy will open the tourney hosting separate three-team pods this weekend, April 28-29. The tourneys will be double elimination in format, and the winners will advance to the conference tournament Final 4 May 5-6 in Ames to be held on the campus of Iowa State University.

The winners of the three-team, double-elimination tourneys will be joined by the highest remaining seed that did not win a pod. Those four teams will participate in next weekend's double-elimination final round, and the final team to emerge from next weekend's finals will receive the MCC's automatic berth to the NAIA National Softball Championships May 17-23 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

[Softball] Garcia named NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Iowa Wesleyan College senior pitcher Sierrah Garcia has been named the NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the national organization.

Garcia won the award on the heels of her being named Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. She is the first player in school history to be named national softball pitcher of the week, and just the second player in school history and first in 13 years to receive an NAIA national weekly award. Stacey Scharer was previously named NAIA National Player of the Week during the 1999 season.

CLINTON, Iowa - For the second consecutive season, the Ashford University softball team hosted its Breast Cancer Awareness Day last Saturday, Mar. 24 when the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange visited River Queen Field in Clinton.

Gorgeous March weather greeted a large turnout for the team which used a pair of come-from-behind victories to sweep the non-conference doubleheader against the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University, 3-2 and 4-3.
