This award recognizes students who represent the high ideals of a Catholic college education through demonstrating leadership and service to the community. McCarthy was one of only three Viterbo University seniors to be recognized for this award.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

            <title>[Women's Cross Country] Birru Brings Home National Championship</title>

            <description>&lt;P&gt;It was a fitting end to the career of the most decorated runner in the history of the Grand View women's cross country program. After finishing 18&lt;SUP&gt;th&lt;/SUP&gt;, eighth, and third at the NAIA Championships in the three previous years, Grand View senior Obsie Birru (Johnston, Iowa) has become a National Champion.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Birru finished first in the field of&amp;nbsp;323 runners at the NAIA women's Cross Country Championship held today in Vancouver, Washington. &amp;nbsp;She led the race start to finish and completed the 5k in a school record 17:15. Birru finished nine seconds in front of runner-up Lauren Jimison of Azusa Pacific.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

            <title>[Women's Cross Country] MCC women's cross country all-conference honors</title>

            <description>&lt;div&gt;The Midwest Collegiate Conference women's cross country all-conference honors for the 2011 season were announced on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the conclusion of the MCC Championships held at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seven runners received First Team All-MCC honors on the basis of finishing in the top seven spots individually in the championship. A total of twelve more runners received honorable mention all-conference recognition. Obsie Birru was named the conference Harrier of the Year for the fourth straight year after winning her fourth consecutive individual title at the conference championships. Jerry Monner of Grand View was named MCC Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to their first-ever MCC women's cross country title.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

            <title>[Women's Cross Country] Viking Women Qualify for Nationals; Birru Wins Fourth Title</title>

            <description>&lt;P&gt;The Viking women's cross country competed today at the MCC Championships hosted by Clarke University in Dubuque. The Vikings won its first-ever&amp;nbsp;conference team&amp;nbsp;title to qualify for nationals and senior Obsie Birru (Des Moines, Iowa) captured her fourth straight individual title and Harrier of the Year honors.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Birru completed the race in 18:00.9, over a minute in front of second place finisher Bea Foley of Viterbo. Senior Kara Keller (Middletown, Iowa) placed fourth in 20:01.5 and Sadie Fisher was right behind Keller, finishing fifth in 20:06.2. Birru, Keller and Fisher all earned MCC All-Conference recognition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Senior Betsy Craig (West Point, Iowa) came in 14&lt;SUP&gt;th&lt;/SUP&gt;(20:46.3) and junior Alicia Dean (McPherson, Kan.) was 17&lt;SUP&gt;th&lt;/SUP&gt;(21:01.6) to round out the top five runners and national qualifiers for Grand View. Craig's top-15 finish earned her MCC Honorable Mention honors.&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;</description>

            <title>[Women's Cross Country] Birru NAIA National Runner of the Week</title>

            <description>&lt;P&gt;Grand View senior Obsie Birru (Des Moines, Iowa) has been selected as the NAIA National Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week announced Wednesday. It is Birru's third national weekly honor; she was also the NAIA Women's Track Athlete of the Week in both February and April of 2011.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Birru broke Grand View's 5K record and established a personal-best 17:30.24 to capture top honors at the Mid-States Classic hosted by Southwestern (Kan.) last Saturday.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;The senior crossed the finish line 39 seconds ahead of Baker's (Kan.) Lauren Jaqua. Behind the Des Moines, Iowa native's efforts, the Vikings took home fifth place as a team with 135 points. The combined time between the five Grand View runners of 1:36.13 also set a new school record.&lt;/P&gt;</description>

            <title>[Women's Cross Country] Birru Third at NAIA Championships; All-American for Third Time</title>

            <description>&lt;div&gt;Grand View junior standout Obsie Birru (Des Moines, Iowa) took third placed in a field of331 runners today at the NAIA Cross Country Championships held today in Vancouver, Washington. Birru ran the 5k race in 17:51 and her third place finished earned her All-American honors for the third consecutive year. She bettered her 2009 finish by five places and 29 seconds. Birru, the top finisher in today's race from the MCC, was 18th in 2008.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Birru was just nine seconds behind champion Shorter senior Justyna Mudy who defended her individual crown by completing the 5K course in 17:42. Mudy finished four seconds ahead of runner-up Karlee Coffey from Eastern Oregon (17:46). The top-five finishers were within 11 seconds of each other. Rounding out the top-five were Birru, Erin Curran of Black Hills State (S.D.) in fourth (17:52) and fifth-place finisher Lauren Jimison of Azusa Pacific (17:53).&lt;/div&gt;</description>
