Ashford Saints Volleyball Team Breaks School Record
The Ashford University Saints’ Volleyball team prepares to enter the post-season play knowing that they have already accumulated more wins this year than any other Saints’ volleyball squad. With a current record of 21-10 overall and 5-2 in the Midwest Classic Conference, the ladies are playing with a lot of confidence. Head Coach Micah Cewe is preparing his squad for the playoffs as he continues a fantastic first season at the helm. Cewe was an assistant coach during the 2004-2005 season and was a natural choice to step into the head coaching role. He attributes a lot of the success to the work ethic and defense, “I am a strong believer in defense and staying intense on the court. We focused many practices solely on receiving, passing and digging the ball this year. I have always told the team that we have the offensive threats with great hitters, but we need to improve our focus on defense. When our girls hustle on defense and play with passion and intensity they feel unstoppable.”
Ashford University has never had a 20-win season, but the team is not content. The seniors have made huge steps since their freshman year, and the program is getting more respect and recognition throughout the region. They are still hungry for a conference championship and an invitation to regionals. “I have always told the team that they should never be satisfied with what they have on the volleyball court because there is always someone better. A 20-win season is great, but we still believe there is a lot of unfinished business our girls have set out to accomplish.”
