MAHMENS TO JOIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM
The Ashford University women’s basketball program has announced the signing of Bethany Mahmens, a native of Goose Lake, IA who prepped at Northeast High School. Mahmens, the daughter of Mark and Shelly Mahmens, plans to major in a business related field focusing on marketing and public relations.
“Bethany brings a solid basketball background to our program. Northeast has had an outstanding tradition of success and we are thrilled that Bethany is bringing her talents to our team. She can score, she can rebound, and she can pass the ball. Bethany definitely has the skills we need to be successful,” said Coach Chris Powers.
Mahmens averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals for the Rebels during her senior campaign. She earned second team All-Conference and All-Area honors for her efforts.
Mahmens follows two of her sisters to the University. Michelle Mahmens Meyermann, began at Mount St. Clare College in August 1999, while Alicia started the following year. They are both graduates of the institution. Both has standout careers and played on the 2001-02 team that holds the school record for victories. Alicia currently serves as the assistant coach for the Saints’ program.
Athletics Director Meg Schebler coached the older Mahmens siblings from 1999-2004 and claims to have begun recruiting Bethany years ago. “I don’t know if she remembers, but when Bethany was in 7th grade she told me she was coming to play for us. Although I’m not coaching anymore, I can’t tell you how happy I am to have her join our program,” Schebler stated. “The Mahmens have been a constant presence on this campus for almost seven years now. I think it is pretty cool that the family has had involvement in our institution throughout the transitions from Mount St. Clare to the Franciscan University and now Ashford University. They have created a legacy that Bethany continues and I’m looking forward to watching her play over the next four years.”
