Oskaloosa--Former William Penn baseball star Joey Grant will be taking his left-handed magic to the next level after signing a contract to play for the Gary (Ind.) Railcats.

The Railcats, a professional independent franchise in the Northern League, adds Grant after a Statesmen career that included him receiving all-Midwest Collegiate Conference honors as a junior in 2008.

"This really is a dream come true for me," Grant said.

In his two-year Penn career, he owned an 11-5 record with a 3.40 Earned Run Average. As a junior, he topped the pitching staff in wins, appearances, starts, completes games, innings, and strikeouts. As a senior last spring, he helped the team to a league crown by heading them in appearances, shutouts, and opponent batting average.

A two-time MCC Pitcher of the Week, Grant will join a Gary team that won last season's Northern League regular season title with a 57-39 mark.

Grant is set to report to spring training on May 10, while the season is slated to begin on May 20.

"Joey threw a lot of really big games for us and was obviously a huge part of our success for two years," Statesmen Head Coach Mike Laird said. "I am very happy he has the opportunity to move up."
