The Grand View women's track & field team claimed its second consecutive MCC Indoor Track & Field championship Saturday in Sterling, Ill.
Grand View won seven of the eighteen events held and finished with a team score of 203. St. Ambrose came in second behind the Vikings (171), Mount Mercy was third (143), Ashford fourth (99), Clarke fifth (64), William Penn sixth (5), and Iowa Wesleyan seventh (4).
GVU sophomore Obsie Birru won four events and set meet records in every event that she won. Birru was champion in the 800m (2:22.21), the Mile (5:13.88), the 3,000m (10:35.79), and the 5,000m (17:52.77). Birru met the NAIA "A" standard national qualifying mark in the 5,000m and "B" standard times in the Mile and the 3,000m. She was named the MCC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
Mandy Streu of St. Ambrose was named MCC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. She won the shot put (13.95m) and was fifth in the weight throw (13.60m). Her shot put mark was a new meet record and the second-best mark in the NAIA this year.
Grand View coach Jerry Monner was chosen by his peers as MCC Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
