Ron Wastyn was recently named the head women's golf coach at St. Ambrose University
A three-time conference coach of the year, Ron Wastyn returns to the helm of the St. Ambrose women's golf program it was announced today by SAU Director of Athletics Ray Shovlain. Wastyn replaces Dr. Michael Orfitelli, who passed away unexpectedly in October.
Wastyn served as the head coach of the program from 2002-05, when he led the Queen Bees to three straight NAIA National Championship appearances.
"I am excited to return to the program and look forward to continuing the process of making SAU women's golf a nationally-competitive team," said Wastyn. "Our goal is not just to make it to nationals but to compete with the very best teams in the NAIA."
In his previous tenure, Wastyn's Bees set numerous team and individual
scoring records. He coached Amanda Marr, a 2003 All-American.
"Ron brings outstanding golf coaching and administrative experience to the program," said Shovlain. "We are very pleased he was willing to return has head coach. This is a difficult time but he will do a great job with his excellent coaching and teaching abilities."
Wastyn takes over a program coming off a strong fall season. The Queen
Bees won five tournaments, including the SAU Fighting Bee Open and the
season-ending Midwest Collegiate Conference Invitational.
Active in local competitive amateur golf, Wastyn has played in three
Hasley Cup competitions, a Ryder Cup format pitting golfers from Iowa
against those from Illinois. He is also on the Board of the Quad City
Amateur Tour and served as the Director of the 2009 NAIA National Men's Golf Championships hosted by St. Ambrose, a role he will resume again this spring.
Prior to joining SAU, Wastyn was an assistant coach for the Black Hawk
College men's golf program from 2000-02. He also currently serves as
the Director of the Master of Organizational Leadership program and is
a Professor in the Managerial Studies program.
