The Midwest Collegiate Conference has announced its cross country all-conference honors for the 2009 season. Twenty-eight athletes received honors based on their finishes at the conference championship meet and two head coaches were recognized for awards as well by the MCC.
Grand View sophomore Obsie Birru was named the MCC Women's Harrier of the Year after winning the individual title at the conference meet on Nov. 7. Birru finished the 5-kilometer course at the Lacey Sports Complex in Oskaloosa in 18:25. It was her second straight conference championship.

Mount Mercy Head Coach Ryan Scheckel was named Women's Coach of the Year. Scheckel led the Mustangs to their fourth straight conference championship, with all seven of his team's runners individually finishing in the top 13. It is his fourth straight Coach of the Year award and his fifth overall in nine seasons leading the Mount Mercy program.

"Coach Scheckel has done a tremendous job of building a strong women's cross country program over the years," said Mount Mercy Athletic Director Scot Reisinger. "His success is not limited to the conference titles his team has earned as his athletes excel in the classroom and in the community as well. His ‘family' coaching style fits perfectly with the Mount Mercy Mission and the entire College is proud of his accomplishments."

St. Ambrose sophomore John Darmody was named MCC Men's Harrier of the Year after winning the men's individual title at the conference meet. Darmody finished the 8K course in 25:50 for his first conference championship.

Dan Zeimet of St. Ambrose was named the Men's Head Coach of the Year for the fourth straight year after leading the Fighting Bees to their fourth straight conference championship. St. Ambrose featured the top two finishers in the men's race and six of the top 12 individuals. Zeimet has now won a total of six MCC Coach of the Year awards in his seven years as coach of the SAU men's and women's teams, including two awards as coach of the Queen Bees women's team.

"Dan has done an outstanding in leading both the men and women's cross country programs," said St. Ambrose Athletic Director Ray Shovlain."His dedication, enthusiasm and knowledge has served him well to ensure the great success we have experienced over the years."
