The Iowa Wesleyan College soccer programs recently raised more than $800 as part of the teams' Play For A Cure promotion in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

To raise money a silent auction was held before the Tigers' home matches on Oct. 24 against St. Ambrose University. The auction included clothing, equipment and other items donated by IWC's athletic teams, as well as gifts and other merchandise donated by Mount Pleasant businesses. The Tiger soccer teams also auctioned off the special black and pink jerseys they wore for the matches.

IWC women's soccer player Britni Walker organized the event with advisory and assistance from Lori Wilson of the IWC Department of Institutional Relations. Walker obtained the donations of a large number of items from IWC sports teams and area businesses, and the two also sold long-sleeve t-shirts throughout the month of October as part of the promotion.

Between the silent auction and the t-shirt sales IWC raised more than $1,500 for breast cancer research. The money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

It was the first time a Wesleyan athletics team has held an event in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month. After working hard to help organize the first event, Walker is hopeful of seeing it continue after her graduation.

"As a senior I would love to see the team carry on this tradition," said Walker, a psychology major at IWC. "Regardless of the outcome, we are playing for something much bigger than ourselves and it feels good to be able to help."
