St. Ambrose junior Dusty Drenth
After finishing in a tie for 10th at the 2009 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships, St. Ambrose University junior Dusty Drenth was named to two All-America First Teams.
Drenth was one of 15 players named to the 2009 NAIA Men's Golf All-American First Team and one of just 10 players named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) PING All-America First Team.
The junior from Davenport, Iowa, was earlier named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golfer of the Year after earning individual medalist honors at three events this year, including the prestigious NAIA Classic at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Drenth averaged a 72.58 through 31 rounds this year.
He capped his terrific season by his 10th-place finish at the National Championships, hosted by St. Ambrose at the TPC @ Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Ill. He earned all-tournament team honors with his top-10 finish.
Drenth was steady all week but saved his best round for the end. After shooting rounds of 74-75-75, Drenth fired a 71 to finish with an 11-over-par 295 at the four-round event.
As a team, St. Ambrose failed to make the cut after the third round and settled for 24th place in the 29-team field. Drenth advanced to the final round based on his individual results.
The 2009 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships were hosted by St. Ambrose University and the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau. The event will also return to TPC @ Deere Run next year.
"The Quad Cities Convention Center & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission are thrilled with the results of the NAIA Men's Golf Championships," said Lynn Hunt, VP of Tourism Sales for the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The NAIA staff, coaches, athletes, families and fans were a pleasure to host. The success of this event can only be attributed to the hard work and dedication of our host committee and volunteers that were here throughout the tournament. The outstanding preparation and execution were possible due to the collaborative efforts of St. Ambrose University, the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Lodge Hotel, TPC Deere Run staff, the Iowa Department of Economic Development and St. Ambrose Alumni. We can't wait to welcome the NAIA back in May 2010."
