Waldorf College - 2009 MCC Softball Champions
After defeating Mount Mercy College once earlier in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament, the Waldorf College softball team defeated the Mustangs once again on Friday afternoon in Coralville, as they took the 6-4, 10 inning victory in the championship game. The Warriors went undefeated, 5-0, in the tournament as they took the MCC Championship and now advance to the NAIA National Softball Tournament.

The Championship game was played in true fashion as it was tied through seven innings. The game lasted three more innings before Waldorf pushed through two runs to take the 6-4 victory.

It was Waldorf that would score first in the third inning, as Andrea Blanchard started things off with a single to center field. Sarah Swanson then grounded out to advance Blanchard to second. Megan Forster followed with an RBI single to drive in Blanchard. Forster scored on the next play as Laura Read doubled to push the Warriors to a 2-0 lead.

Waldorf extended the lead to four in the fourth inning when Rachel Hannam hit a two run single to left field. The hit followed a one out single by Melissa Vance and a walk to Laura Suter.

Waldorf's celebration was delayed when Mount Mercy rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. After two scoreless innings, the Warriors finally pushed two runs across in the top of the tenth. Swanson started things off for the Warriors as she singled to center. One out later, Laura Read walked and both runners advanced on a fly out by Katie Bredlow. Jordan Story then followed with a two out single to left to drive in both runs, giving Waldorf the 6-4 lead.

A three up, three down bottom of the tenth, secured the victory for Waldorf College, as they took the 6-4 win and the MCC Championship.

Waldorf advances to the NAIA National Softball Tournament for the first time; their last trip to a National Softball Tournament was in 2000 as a junior college. NAIA Tournament play begins Thursday, May 14, in Decatur, Ala.
