Oskaloosa--Lady Statesmen basketball star Christa Subbert (So., Stanton, Stanton HS) capped off a year to remember as she was named to the 2008-2009 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball All-American teams, announced by the national office Tuesday.

Subbert, who was one of 64 players honored in Division II, was named to the Honorable-Mention squad. Ten players each were placed on the first, second, and third teams, while 34 players were honorable mentions.

The All-American nod is the first for the Penn women's basketball program since Nicki Baldwin was a AWSF First-Team All-American selection during the 1990-1991 season. Subbert's award is the 14th All-American award in program history.

The sophomore, a first-team all-Midwest Collegiate Conference selection, led Penn during a 10-22 season (2-14 MCC). She topped the league in scoring with 304 points, highlighted by a career-high 36 points against Viterbo in the regular-season finale on February 21.

For the season, Subbert tallied 551 points for a 17.2 point average. She will enter her junior year just 50 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau at 950 career points. The sophomore also averaged 7.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.7 blocks, and 1.5 steals during the year.

Subbert, the MCC's Player of the Week on February 24, reached double figures in 25 of 32 games, including also surpassing the 30-point mark with 34 points against Clarke on January 31.

"Christa had a tremendous season and she is very deserving of this honor," Lady Statesmen Head Coach Brian Spielbauer said. "She is great to coach as she just comes to work every day and you would never know if anything was bothering her. She is a model student-athlete on and off the court. We are very happy to have her here and look forward to the next two years with her."

Dani Gass, a senior from the national champion Morningside Mustangs, was named the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Year. MCC Player of the Year Ali Dolphin of St. Ambrose was a Second-Team All-American honoree.
