Mount Mercy College had the top three finishers in the 5K, including Harrier of the Year Mallory Marshall, as the Mustangs won the 2006 Midwest Classic Conference Women’s Cross Country championship on Saturday at Crow Creek Park.

Marshall, a freshman, continued a streak of 10 straight years that a Mount Mercy runner has won the conference crown. She is also the third member of her family to be named MCC Harrier of the Year for the Mustangs. Sisters Leslie (1998-99) and Amy (2000-03) Marshall won six consecutive titles from 1998-2003.

Megan Spurgin began Mount Mercy’s hold on the MCC individual title in 1997. After Leslie and Amy Marshall’s dominance from 1998-2003, juniors Heather Collum and Katie Larsen were named Harrier of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

Mallory Marshall's winning time was 19:52.50. Larsen, Collum and freshman Chelsea Kvidera joined her on the 2006 all-conference team. Larsen was runner-up in 20:11.13, Kvidera placed third in 20:24.68 and Collum finished seventh in 20:57.24. Other Mount Mercy runners included junior Katie Schlutz (ninth/21:09.31), senior Tera Behning (12th/21:12.38), senior Katie Huether (17th/21:37.93), junior Melissa Caster (19th/21:50.19) and freshman Kortney Kluesner (30th/23:45.90).

Mount Mercy Head Coach Ryan Scheckel picked up his second MCC Women’s Coach of the Year award after the Mustangs won the fifth team championship in school history with 22 points. St. Ambrose University was second with 44 points, followed by William Penn University with 79 and Grand View College with 92.

Junior Bryan Johnson earned all-conference honors for the Mount Mercy's men's squad, finishing fifth in the 8K with a time of 27:45.64. Junior Matt Hilby placed 12th in 28:19.21, junior Greg Blythe 15th in 28:34.18, freshman Matt John 27th in 31:37.41 and freshman Michael Daws 30th in 32:02.79.

The Mustangs were fourth on the men's side with 79 points. St. Ambrose won the team title with 35 points. Grand View came in second with 40 points, followed by William Penn with 75.

Up next for the Mustangs is the NAIA Region VII Cross Country Championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Camp Shaw-Wah-Nas-See in Bourbonnais, Ill.
