Des Moines, Iowa - The Midwest Collegiate Conference has announced it women's soccer All-Conference honors. Twenty-nine athletes were recognized as part of the All-Conference Teams as voted by the coaches; fourteen to the First Team and fifteen to the Honorable Mention Team. Viterbo senior forward Ashley Sorenson (Reedsburg, Wis.) was selected as the MCC Player of the Year. Sorenson lead the MCC in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2008: goals (1st - 11), goals per game (1st - 1.38), points (1st - 23), points per game (1st - 2.88), game-winning goals (1st - 3), shots (1st - 41), and shots per game (1st - 5.12). She was the MCC Offensive Player of the Week four times this fall. "Ashley is fierce competitor who leads on and off the field. On the field, her intelligence and skill set made her a dangerous individual player, but also made her teammates bettor as well. Even more importantly, she is a true Champion of Character who is committed to making the campus community and the world a better place'" said Viterbo head coach Will Lemke. Ashford freshman forward Abbye Garcia (Stillman Valley, Ill.) was deemed the MCC Newcomer of the Year. Garcia was among MCC leaders in several categories: goals (2nd - 9), goals per game (2nd - 1.12), assists (5th - 2), points (2nd - 20), points per game (2nd - 2.50), shots (3rd - 28), and shots per game (3.50) For the second consecutive year, St. Ambrose head coach Jon Mannall was selected by his peers as the MCC Coach of the Year. In his sixth year at the helm of the Queen Bees, Mannall led his team to a 7-1 MCC record and the MCC regular season and tournament titles and its first-ever berth to the NAIA National Championship. "This is tremendous recognition for the work Coach Mannall has done. It is great that the other coaches in the conference have recognized him and our entire women's soccer program. We are extremely excited that our women's soccer team has won back-to-back conference titles and are headed to the National Tournament this year," said St. Ambrose athletic director Ray Shovlain.
