Krysta Schmitt, Brittany Ward and Sam Cohen scored shoot-out goals
helping St. Ambrose earn an automatic berth into the NAIA National
Tournament with a shoot-out victory over Grand View in the championship
match of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament. The two teams
were locked in a scoreless tie through two overtimes before the Bees
prevailed 3-2 in penalty kicks at Muscatine High School Wednesday afternoon.
The match was a defensive struggle between the top two teams in the
MCC. SAU out-shot Grand View 12-6 but neither team had many good
scoring opportunities.
SAU goalkeeper Erica Inendino made three saves, including a diving stop
at the end of the second half, to send the match into the shoot-out.
In the shoot-out, the Bees fell behind early. Alex Hemmen misfired off the crossbar on the first PK attempt. With the Bees down 1-0 after the first shooters, Schmitt scored the equalizer and Inendino came up with a big save. Ward and Grand View's Kim Hall exchanged goals to knot the shoot-out at 2-2.
As SAU's fourth shooter, Cohen slipped one by the Vikings keeper to give the Bees the advantage. The Vikings fourth shooter, McKenzie McAdaragh, slid a shot just outside the left post. After Shelby Van Gieson's potential game-winning PK was stopped by Jorie Shields-Smith, Autumn Stephens, Grand View's final shooter, fired a shot off the crossbar to give the Bees the MCC title.

The Bees will now wait until Sunday when the NAIA National Tournament bracket will be announced. This will be the first NAIA National Tournament appearance for a St. Ambrose women's soccer team in program history.
