Oskaloosa--The Statesmen soccer squad gained its first league win of the year as it shut out Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Wednesday.

Jacob Plocher
(Jr., West Plains, Mo., West Plains HS) gave Penn (6-4-2, 1-2 MCC) an early advantage by getting a long shot past the Tiger goalkeeper at the 6:08 mark for his second goal of the year.

Javier Del Toro (Jr., Joliet, Ill., Joliet CC) added another score in the first half as he scored off a pass from Jamie Gibbons (Jr., West Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) at the 28:21 point. The goal was the team-leading seventh of 2008 for Del Toro, who led Penn with five shots.

Vince Beseau (Jr., Florissant, Mo., Hazelwood Central HS) capped the night's scoring activity with his fourth goal of the year at the 75:30 mark. The assist again went to Gibbons.

Helped by a strong defense in front of him and several stellar saves himself (seven total), Penn goalkeeper Tadeo Cavazos (So., Baytown, Texas, Lee HS) collected his sixth solo shutout of the season, breaking the single-season school record of five, set by Tugberk Tekdemir in 2005.
