It was an historic day for the Mount Mercy men's soccer program on Saturday. The Mustangs, which began intercollegiate competition in 1992, earned their 100th win overall and 87th under 14th-year Head Coach Amir Hadzic. Senior forward Nick Miller also made history, tying Dan Warne's all-time record for goals scored. Miller's 51st career goal, assisted by freshman midfielder Denis Krdzalic, got Mount Mercy on the board in the 61st minute. More than 20 minutes after the Mustangs tied the match, Miller worked the ball to sophomore forward Petar Triva, who dribbled 20 yards before directing the game-winner just out of reach of Ashford goalkeeper Nick Roman. Terrific goaltending by Roman and Mount Mercy freshman Nenad Simovic kept both teams in the game. Roman recorded seven saves, while Simovic stopped 10 shots, including a penalty kick by the Saints (4-2-1, 0-1-0 MCC) in the 66th minute that would have snapped a 1-1 tie. The Mustangs go for their third straight win when they take on intra-city rival Coe on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids. A three-game homestand follows, beginning with MCC rival Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Lower Kingston Field. |
