Des Moines, Ia. – The Midwest Collegiate Conference announced its 2008 baseball all-conference honors. Thirty-five athetes were recognized as part of the all-conference teams as voted by the coaches; seventeen to the First Team and eighteen to the Honorable Mention Team.

St. Ambrose junior first basemen Brett Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill.) was voted the MCC Player of the Year. Newsome batted .473 this season with 50 runs, 61 hits, 19 doubles, 2 triples, and 8 home runs. He was selected as the MCC Player of the Week in March.

For the second consecutive year, St. Ambrose senior Daniel Cutler (Davenport, Ia.) was the MCC Pitcher of the Year. Cutler finished the season with a 2.25 ERA and an 8-1 record. He pitched four complete games, two shutouts, and recorded 49 strikeouts. Cutler was named MCC Pitcher of the Week in April.

St. Ambrose head coach Jim Callahan was selected as the MCC Coach of the Year. In his twelfth year at the helm of the Fighting Bees, Callahan led his team to a 21-3 record for first place in the MCC. The regular season title was the eighth for the St. Ambrose baseball program, its fifth under Callahan.

"Coach Callahan and the SAU baseball program need to be commended on their hard work and positive perseverance this year. They continued to battle the weather, conditions, and opponents to earn the MCC title. It is a great recognition that Jim is honored as the Coach of the Year given the other great coaches in the MCC. It is a well-deserved recognition," said St. Ambrose athletic director Ray Shovlain.
