Des Moines -- With a pair of wins over Grand View College, the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees completed an incredible comeback to defend their Midwest Collegiate Conference championship.
The Fighting Bees beat Grand View 2-0 and 19-10 to finish a half-game ahead of second place William Penn. SAU, who started the conference season 3-3, won an incredible 18 straight MCC games to claim their eighth MCC banner. In game one, Danny Cutler pitched a gem of a game, going the distance striking out six while not walking one batter. He scattered three hits as Kyle Merten drove in the game deciding run in the fifth. In the nightcap it was a little more offensive as both teams shelled out double-figures in the runs column. The Bees trailed in the fifth inning until five straight hits capped off by Mark Gaulden's RBI double put the Bees in front for the first time. In the sixth inning, Tyler Fletcher knocked a grand slam to open up the game and give SAU a six run lead. The Bees would coast from there. |
