Oskaloosa--As part of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative, several members of the William Penn men’s golf team volunteered their time by ringing bells for the Salvation Army on Monday, December 3.
Team members rang bells from 3-7:30 p.m. in front of the east door of the Oskaloosa Wal-Mart, collecting a total of $120.54 in donations. It is the second year in a row that the program volunteered for the Christmas Kettle Campaign.
Overall, the Salvation Army of Mahaska County raised $28,276.13 during the holiday season, exceeding its goal of $25,000. The funds raised will go to those who have suffered tragedies as well as children and families in need in Oskaloosa and Mahaska County.
"It really was the least we could do," Statesmen Co-Head Coach Wade Steinlage said. "It was certainly a little chilly outside, but we were warmed by the well wishes from others and the thought that we were helping those in need."
The team, which already volunteered at its home facility of Edmundson Golf Course during the fall, plans to perform another community service project in the spring as well.
