Khyia Lewis (WPU): 2012 MCC Softball Player of the Year
The Midwest Collegiate Conference has announced its all-conference honors for the 2012 softball season. Thirty-eight athletes were recognized as part of the all-conference teams as voted on by coaches.

William Penn senior outfielder Khyia Lewis (Ottumwa, Iowa) is the 2012 MCC Player of the Year. Lewis led the conference in a number of categories, including runs batted in (56), doubles (16), total bases (131), slugging percentage (.789) and on base percentage (.462). She also tied for the MCC lead in both home runs (16) and runs scored (53) and was third in batting average (.367) and hits (61). Lewis is 10th in the NAIA in home runs and also ranks in the top 20 nationally in total bases and RBIs, and helped the Lady Statesmen to the MCC regular season title.

"Khyia had a tremendous year and was consistent all spring for us," said William Penn Head Coach Mike Christner. "She finally committed to softball and was rewarded for it. This is a well-deserved award for Khyia."

William Penn's Jennifer Whitehead (Oskaloosa, Iowa) was named MCC Pitcher of the Year for the second year in a row. Whitehead this year has posted a 21-9 record with a 1.34 earned run average. She led the conference in ERA, wins, opponents' batting average (.206) and innings pitched (193 2/3) and was second in the MCC in strikeouts with 171. Whitehead ranks in the top 15 nationally in both wins and innings pitched and in two years has compiled a 43-18 record pitching for the Lady Statesmen with a pair of conference titles.

"Jen had another great season," Christner said. "She took a step forward and did a great job for us. It is another well-deserved award for a deserving individual."

Christner was chosen by his coaching peers as the MCC Coach of the Year. Christner led the Lady Statesmen to the MCC regular season title this year, his six conference title in 11 years at Penn. His team lurked just outside the NAIA national top 25 rankings for much of the season, and this is the third time in his career he has received Coach of the Year honors.

"Coach Christner works extremely hard to have a successful program," said William Penn Athletic Director Greg Hafner. "His record over the years is indicative of his efforts."
